Descent of the Ganga

Mamallapuram, about an hour south of Chennai along India's East coast, hosts India's largest and most dramatic relief-sculpture representing the celebrated myth of the descent of the river Ganga from heaven to earth. The Great Penance, is carved out of a giant granite rock wall 27 meters wide and 9 meters tall, and the project was believed to be initiated during the reign of the Pallava King Mahendra Varman, ca 7th century bce.

While a traditional sculpture (or other work of art) would memorialize a climactic scene, this Great Penance is depicted as a "continuous narrative," wherein multiple scenes from a series of events are portrayed on the same canvas, permitting the observer to focus on different parts of the work and recollect different scenes in the narrative. The more details one observes and associates, the more richer the experience.

Beautiful Picture! I had visited that place when I was working for HCL in Chennai, back when I was in India, for a weekend party and trip. I loved the place. It is so beautiful with all those carvings.

I had known the history a bit, but not so in depth. Thanks for posting.

BTW, how did you ahve your name on the picture?

yes Aparna - I too found that I see things superficially.
Now I plan my trips well in advance, Buy books and read on the places before I go - then I take pics, enjoy, talk to the guides and when I come back - I read more books and then try to write a detailed article. This is certainly for my own memory, but also to share the glory of our heritage with others who want to visit.

I crop and modify the images in Photoshop and that is where I add the copyright info.

Thanks
:-)

Cool...I have to try that trick some time!

I have been doing the same now. Started with the current place I am living in..writing about the heritage, history, etc in my personal journal...tried the same when I went back home...its still in starting phase. :)
