Kaapi: Way Coffee Should be Enjoyed!

Don't know about you, but here in the Northeast we had a foggy, drizzly and grey weekend.

Running Update: To keep up with my training for the Marine Corps Marathon in Washington DC (Yaay!) I had to run 13 miles through partial rain and dodging puddles the entire way. Running with squishy shoes for a couple of hours is not fun! I made it around in horrible time and sore hamstrings.

This year its the hamstrings and lung capacity which has been slowing me. Appears my lungs have NOT fully recovered from the bronchitis I got earlier in the Spring and kept me from the Boston Marathon. For the first four miles, I find myself gasping and unable to pick my pace. My doctor is not surprised and mentions that after bronchitis, lungs need 6-8 months to recover vital capacity. While I don't notice a deficit in most activities, running long distances needs my entire lung capacity, which is still compromised. But I plod on! Have no hopes for breaking 4 hours, but it would be good to FINISH a marathon this year!

How do I pick myself up after a lousy run on a wet weekend? A nice cup of piping hot South Indian style kaapi! The perfect antidote for a washed out weekend, ... and watching my retirement portfolio in a death spiral! :-(

Always More!

My mom would have loved this post. She loves coffee...made the traditional way...somehwere down the line caught with the speed of life, she got used to the instant coffee...but now and then she still does this method.

I dont drink coffee (as a matter of fact no tea, sodas, beer and milk). But, always loved the smell of this brewing coffee esp the Bru coffee.. :)

my mom still does this. She actually starts the filter going the previous night, so she has the decoction ready in the morning - suggest this to you mom.

Good for you that you are not addicted to these libations - and WoW!
do you have breakfast? and juice?
WoW

Hmm..I shud tell her that. She loves this kind of coffee always. :)

Yes I do have breakfast. A big glass of orange juice (sometimes apple) with a bowl of cereal (oat meal mostly) with soya milk (not the ordinary milk). Although I did not mention...sometimes on occasions I do take a glass of white whine or mohito. And lots and lots and lots of water.

For some reason I never could get addicted to tea, coffee, beer, milk, etc. Weird member of my family!

Looks like a healthy way to start the day!

Soya milk is healthy! but I just could not develop the taste - though I like Raagi-milk my grand mar used to make in India; it is still available as a summer refreshing drink!

Lost my taste for Beer; Now it is an occasional glass of Red Wine - even that is now on hold during my marathon training! :-))

Hope this works out for your mom.

Thanks. The only reason I drink Soya Milk is to keep bones strong. I have a family history of weak bones...so just being cautious...plus crossing 30 means keep your health in good condiiton for your coming 50s. :)

Good luck on your marathon training.

you remind me, if you are not drinking milk, also take a calcium supplement;
and even mild/moderate exercise is good at maintaining bone stock.
Soya milk is fab from a health perspective it has a lot of the omega-3 ALA.
you will live long :-)

i think Ca supplements are advisable as you mention the family history!
(particularly if you are not even eating yogurt)

Oh! I forgot to mention. I eat yogurt, home-made one regularly...without it the dinner or lunch does not end. LOL! I will still consider Ca supplement. :)

Ok! Yogurt is a fabulous addition;
I particularly worry about vegans who even forgo yogurt.

I always wondered how vegans survive when they remove lots of foods from their diets.

You reminded me of bachpan :) Mom used to always make this, exactly this style. And there is a udipi restaurant in Matunga that makes this awesome kaapi ;)

Note to self: get this filter when in India :)

Arun, have you tried advertising in khabbar (http://www.ekhabbar.com/), or KSA to ask donations for the school? I saw an ad for another school in a previous issue of khabbar, and thought of asking.

THank you Mala:
Matunga is verily the center of the South Indian Universe (in Mumbai)
They have so many fabulous places! We even get some of our south indian snacks from specific places in matunga! On our next trip I have promised myself a suitcase dedicated to bringing back chivda, Mando, Malpuri, puran-poli, various ladoos etc! Yaay!

Do you live near Matunga? Lucky you!
agree -

Matunga, yes. But Town (Colaba) is my favorite place for eating out in Bombay.

Mmmmmmmm Sardar's Cheese Pav Bhaji (with butter:-P), Bade Miyaan, New Yorker, Dilli Durbar, Zaafran, the road-side sugarcane juice..................................................
Though I couldn't care less about the fine dine places there...you find them everywhere!

I refuse to go anywhere but town when I step out of the house. My friends are sick of me wanting to be there :-P

did I tell you I grew up in Colaba and my parents still live there? Bade Miyan is about 3 gullis down; Dilli Durbar too and Purnima Juice center for the bestest ganna-juice! :-)

and after my daily morning run, its the Kamats Restaurant where I get their Upma/Shira combo!

No fair talking about food; It might be Nov or Dec before I am there again! you'll have to make the trip when I am there :-)

We will be there from Thursday pm.
